Dietary education for developing children is important to cultivate the fundamentals of practicing healthy eating habits for a lifetime. Eleven (fifth and sixth-grade) children participating in the Shokuiku Classroom at Tenshi College have received dietary education that focuses on actual practice in addition to lectures of the importance of food and lifestyle habits as well as Shokuiku card game, Food Guide Spinning Top and so on. Control group of fifth-grade 28 elementary school children received nothing. Furthermore, the behavior change evaluation method was revised while scores of support for dietary behaviors, selfefficacy, thanks for eating and eating meal's balance were measured. A comparison of the survey results at pre- and post-intervention showed notable improvement in scores of children's self-efficacy as it relates to dietary behavior, food knowledge, thanks for eating and meal's balance. In contrast, the control group showed no significant change in their response. In addition, the results explained problems on evaluation methods based on the Model of Stage of Change. The present study confirmed the effectiveness of the use of fun dietary education methods that focus on actual practice in addition to lectures for developing school children's positive dietary behavior. |
