The use of 99mTc-tetracycline as a tumor-localizing agent for external scanning was assessed in rats, mice, rabbits and man. Tumors were successfully delineated in 14 of 18 patients studied. Chemotherapy and radiotherapy appeared to inhibit tumor uptake of 99mTc-tetracycline; background activity due to uptake by the gastrointestinal and urinary tracts diminished detection of tumors within the abdomen. Outside of the abdomen, patient scintiscans accurately demonstrated the number and extent of the lesions. |
