Popis: Bone cells isolated from the periosteum of 8-day embryonic chick limb buds were infected with an avian leukosis virus (MAV-2(O)). Monolayers of cultured periosteal cells contained bone-specific alkaline phosphatase. After infection with MAV-2(O), the specific activity of this isoenzyme was increased on a per cell basis. MAV-2(O)-infected bone cells were then cloned in methylcellulose culture. These clones grew at a higher rate than did clones of uninfected cells. The limb bud cell assay for MAV-2(O) described in this report is the first developed for measuring the proliferative effects of an avian leukosis virus.
