Analysis of literature treating “Web 2.0” (W2) and/or “Library 2.0” (L2) terms/concepts in the context of rare book/special collection librarianship reveals variation from their understood application in academic librarianship at large. Both a lack of explicitly applied pedagogical practices in library instruction (generally) and special collections’ limited/eccentric adoption of W2/L2 technologies/perspectives (specifically) can impede users’ optimal awareness and use of special collection materials at their universities. Future best practices in rare book/special collection public services require their more consistent adoption of emergent technologies in particular, as well as greater application of more explicit, consistent teaching pedagogies by academic librarianship at large. |
