Cocozzella translates and analyzes a play from the Fifteenth-Century by Joan Rois de Corella that has been completely forgotten by scholars. In showing its importance, he reveals that the theme of emasculation in literature goes back at least to this time. It rethinks the way that females were depicted in literature to show an empowering side to gender that depicts it as indeterminate and the relation between male and female is viewed as conflictive. In doing this one can argue that certain literary conventions that have been overlooked occur in the play because the author was inspired by Isidorian critical theory rather than Aristotlean aesthetics. The book shows that the play trans-values the Ovidian myth of Narcissus into the structure of the “erotic hell' |
