Popis: “Writing Minervas” – that is how Libuše Heczková refers to Czech women literary critics at the turn of the 20th century. She focuses especially on the critic and feminist Eliška Krásnohorská and on those who followed in her steps – Teréza Nováková, Žofie Pohorecká, Pavla Buzková, and other literary personalities like Anna Pammrová or Artuš Drtil. She also traces the destinies of Czech emancipation magazines in which such literary critique flourished: Ženské listy, Ženský svět, Ženská revue, Ženský obzor and Ženské směry. She attempts to clarify the circumstances under which women entered this – as certain period statements called it – “unfeminine” literary discipline. The activities of the “Writing Minervas” thus radically cast in to doubt the “physiological feeble-mindedness” attributed to women at that time.
