The aim of this study is to introduce a theory of linguistic description of certain constructions within the grammatical system of modern Japanese. We focus on the constructions of noun phrase with postpositional morphemes ga and wa while evaluating their characteristics with respect to the linguistic category of SUBJECT. Our analysis assumes the position of functional and cognitive linguistics, considering also typological applications of SUBJECT in modern linguistics. The study is situated in a broader context of Japanese linguistic theories dealing with subject, but it also outlines the evolution of SUBJECT as a general linguistic category, including the dynamics of attempts to integrate it into the description of the Japanese language. |
