Popis: This collective monograph on image schemas and stereotypes in the perspective of cognitively and culturally oriented linguistics is a common project of teachers, PhD students, Master students and graduates of several Czech Studies and Deaf Studies programmes at the Faculty of Arts, Charles University.1 Its objective is both to address theoretical-methodological issues concerning a possible common ground in the cognitive-cultural exploration of spoken and sign languages, and to show concrete examples of how certain schemas and stereotypes demonstrate themselves in the linguistic worldviews of analyzed languages. In the chapters, we tried to present at least a part of collective work of older, younger as well as some very young colleagues – studies on Czech or Czech Sign Language that were shared, discussed and often conducted together. The book is divided into two parts: the first one concentrates on image schemas and corporality in language, especially with regard to the conceptualization of human experience ranging from emotions to spirituality; the other one focuses on language stereotypes in the general sense (stereotypes of home, animals, concerning ethnicity and gender or connected with cities).
