Popis: | This book explores the social and economic aspects of the Penang Malay community since the early 19th century until World War II and a few decades afterwards. The status of Penang as a commercial port since its takeover by the English East India Company (EIC) from the Kedah sultanate in 1786 has radically changed the lifestyle of the Malay community in this state. They did not only compete to improve economic growth, but were also exposed to reforms from foreign countries and among the Malay states. The competitive nature in the cosmopolitan world has also brought advancement in education, literature and printing industry. It is in Penang that modern philosophers were born to bring modernity and used the printing industry as a medium to transform the Malay community. The role of Penang as the gathering and departure point for the pilgrims since mid 19th century has made the printing industry, especially of religious books, developed rapidly in the state. Seberang Perai has also received some of the impacts too. The relationship between Penang and Seberang Perai has become close due to economic, community and religious needs although the Malays in Seberang Perai who were previously under the suzerainty of Kedah before the EIC took over in 1800, still exhibit heavy Kedahan influence. |
