Popis: The volume provides an edition of the four most important prosodic writings of the early National Revival, which defined the field of contemporary controversy between advocates of accentual‑ syllabic verse and quantitative verse. The volume opens with a new Czech translation of Josef Dobrovský's treatises Böhmische Prosodie [Czech prosody] (1795) and Prosodie (1798), which laid the foundation for accentual‑ syllabic reform of Czech verse at the end of the 18th century. It is followed by Pavel Josef Šafařík's and František Palacký's passionate polemic with Dobrovský's accentual‑ syllabic reform and its implementation in the poetic works of the Puchmajer group in the name of quantitative prosody in the treatise Počátkové českého básnictví, obzvláště poezie [The beginnings of Czech poetry, especially prosody] (1818). The volume closes with Šebestián Hněvkovský's hitherto overlooked treatise Zlomky o českém básnictví, zvláště pak o prozódii [Fragments on Czech poetry, particularly on prosody] (1820), which presents a defence of the poetics and achievements of the Puchmajer group and at the same time attempts to synthesize the two opposing prosodies. Edited texts are provided with extensive commentary and notes.
