The article focuses on literacy problem in the U.S. It discusses definitions and types of literacy from the National Assessment Adult Literacy and the National Institute for Literacy, low literacy for non-native English speakers and native English speakers and the role of librarians to address the problem. It discusses programs in Louisiana including adult literacy program, informal program with volunteer tutors and collection of simplified books for adult new readers. |
