As inflation continues to absorb library expenses and state appropriations decrease or remain static, collection-development and acquisitions librarians are obligated to reconsider their materials budgets. In an effort to reduce the serials budget, the acquisitions librarians at Texas A&M University used dBase III+ as a management tool to organize the information necessary to make deselection decisions. The program was structured to include title, call number, OCLC number, price, and other information to be able to identify titles to be cancelled. Data was coded to keep each record under 200 bytes. As work progressed on the project, the librarians realized the many uses a file of this magnitude and flexibility offered. This article describes the initial design of the file and several subsequent applications. Some of these applications are serials-use study, production of binding trigger slips and lists of titles sent to the commercia1 binder, and using the file for a study on security problems in the Current Periodicals Department.
