The author reviews the entry of serials according to the two texts of the first edition of the Anglo-American Cataloging Rules, the causes for the dissatisfaction that had existed with the North American rule, and the reasons why prominent members of the library community had wanted it revised. These are used as a measure by which to judge the success or failure of the second edition of the code. The new code, even as augmented by the Library of Congress guidelines for uniform titles, is found to be wanting. An alternative to rule 21.1B2, applicable not only to serials but to all materials, is discussed. [ABSTRACT FROM PUBLISHER] |
