The article discusses collection development in German libraries. It is suggested that individual collectors of library materials may know their materials very well, but that larger collections are difficult to maintain without the organizational assistance of database management systems. A brief history of library catalog developments is given, and it is noted that technological advancements have made it possible for library catalogs and library materials to be used in similar ways. |
