Discusses a number of changes that took place in Turkey's foreign trade, 1960-70. In 1963, Turkey was admitted to the European Economic Community as an associate member, a membership that took effect for trade purposes in 1965. In order to estimate the effects of membership in the EEC on Turkey's foreign trade, the author compares Turkey's foreign trade during the immediate postmembership period, 1965-70, with that of the immediate premembership period, 1960-65. The trade statistics show shifts in the trade and financial flows that favored the EEC and adversely affected trade with other countries such as the United States. These statistics, however, do not point to the causes of the shifts. |
