Abstrakt: Piracy in the music industry is now a growing global phenomenon, a fact repeatedly bemoaned by the major record companies. Piracy has always been a problem but the rise of new information and communication technologies (ICT) have made it a straightforward and relatively uncomplicated exercise to commit since digitization has allowed the unbundling of the content from the physical conduit (for example, a CD). But the question remains: what does the increase in piracy by consumers signal to the music industry and society at large (if anything)? If the faceless nature of digital piracy is the main underlying reasons for its prevalence, then it is a loud and clear signal of the extent of moral decay in today's society with the emphasis on individuals' short-term material gain. However, if piracy is largely motivated by protest against a system perceived as unfair and unjust then it signals that pirates are virtuous or good persons attempting to improve society through their actions.
