Abstrakt: The article examines the coverage of Hurricane Katrina in 2005 in African American newspapers. The historic role of the African American press in advocating for African Americans is described. Searches of newspaper databases are used to locate articles published in African American newspapers on the experiences of African Americans during the hurricane. It is found that coverage of the hurricane and its effects were far more critical of local, state, and U.S. government responses to the disaster than were less specialized mass media, and that coverage was also critical of general mass media.
