Abstrakt: "The writer in me puffs out his chest...but the young man I am just can't get over the fear of failure" (Een ander leven 237). 1 This is what Bart Moeyaert writes about the moment when he, as an eighteen-year-old boy, had to choose higher education studies. The writer won in the end: in 2023, Moeyaert celebrated his fortieth anniversary as a published author. His rich and broad oeuvre, read by children and adults alike, ranges from the juvenile novel Duet met valse noten (Duet out of Tune; 1983) with which he made his debut as a nineteen-year-old, to primers, picturebooks, poetry, short stories, plays, essays, translations, and now a first autobiographical portrait. In addition to winning numerous awards in Belgium, the Netherlands, and elsewhere, Moeyaert received the Astrid Lindgren Memorial Award in 2019. This year he made it to the short list of the Hans Christian Andersen Award for the third time. Invariably, Moeyaert is praised for his sharp observations and his sober and evocative style. As the jury members of the Astrid Lindgren Memorial Award 2019 stated, "Bart Moeyaert's condensed and musical language vibrates with suppressed emotions and unspoken desires." [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]
