The article explores the changing landscape of book awards and its impact on teacher librarians. It acknowledges the traditional practice of expert judges selecting award-winning books, but raises concerns about whether these books truly resonate with young readers. Some book awards have responded to these concerns by involving children in the judging process and prioritizing diverse representation. The article presents two approaches to book awards: one that focuses on diversity and children's involvement, and another that prioritizes popularity. Librarians must decide which approach to consider when selecting books for their libraries, as both have their advantages and disadvantages. [Extracted from the article] |
