This section presents abstracts of several articles on technical communication. In their article Decorative Color as Rhetorical Enhancement on the World Wide Web, A. Richards and C. David stated that professional communication scholars have defined the decorative narrowly and subordinated it to informational text. Yet, current psychological research indicates that decorative elements elicit emotion-laden reactions that may precede cognitive awareness and influence interpretation of images. Meanwhile, in the article Explicit Structure in Print and Onscreen Documents, D. Farkas said that the structure of print and onscreen documents is made explicit through headings and links. Three important concepts for understanding explicit structure are the display-unit properties of each document medium, the flexible relationship between explicit and implicit structure and the distinction between populated and unpopulated locations in a hierarchy. Moreover, in the article A Prototype Theory Approach to International Web Site Analysis and design, K. Amant argued that as global online access grows. Web site designers find themselves creating materials for an increasing international audience. Cultural groups, however, can have different expectations of what constitutes acceptable Web site design. |
