Abstrakt: The author, as the acs executive director for the past 4 years, expresses his opinion on the future role of the acs along 3 general lines: scientific publications, access to the chemical literature, and chemical education. Since rising cost of publication of scholarly journals have increased, methods of publishing primary articles need to be modified. Suggested possibilities are: summary journals, informal communications such as meetings and preprints, photocopying, and microforms. In the secondary informaiton field, the modern, chemical abstracts service's access system involving on-line computer searches must be popularized so that every body uses it in conjunction with, and eventually perhaps in preference to, the printed abstracts an indexes. Alternatively, more selective versions of the hard-copy publications such as ca selects or mircoform possibilities will be considered. In the field of education, acs will suport developments in computer-aided instruction which should be operated in conjunction with computer terminals provided for access to the world's chemical literature.
