Abstrakt: This paper reviews the background of visualization and visual programming. Visual programming languages are evaluated. Visual representations of knowledge, toolkits addressing visual language development, knowledge-based programming, interface design, and program generation are among the aspects of software in which visualization has been successful. Applications of visualization which are reviewed include knowledge-based systems designed to support domain experts, a visual user interface to UNIX, an expert system built using a referenced toolkit, a rule-driven mail filter, and a high level database interface.
