Online systems often prove far from easy to use. In the best circumstances, system designers work with user evaluation teams to assess the usability of the interface. Argues, however, that it is equally imperative to closely examine how users learn how to use new interfaces and systems. Presents a study concentrating on how users learn to use the interface and functionality of a system. Analyzes videotapes of people using the Illinois Digital Library system during usability tests, as well as transcripts and audiotapes from the sessions. Identifies the types of assumptions users have about systems and how users learn to ``uncover'' new features. Finds that what first appears to be random trial-and-error use of the interface is actually a structured exploration that occurred frequently across sessions. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR] |
