The state legislature of new york, has for the first time appropriated money for a reference and research library resources programme. Plans include: the automation of the state library's serial holdings as a basis for developing a statewide union list of serials; an academic and research library bureau is being organized to advise institutions with research libraries on the development of plans; a study to identify those libraries with major subject strengths; assistance for the development of reference and research library systems on a regional basis. The steps taken over the previous six years to reach this point are outlined. The role of the state library development is important. It is the key to a proper balance among the local, state and federal agencies. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR] |
