Abstrakt: Since librarians first emerged from behind the information desk to provide reference services as independent consultants, they have been discussing the potential ethical challenges and legal liabilities of this practice. While general reference skills form the bedrock for any successful information practice, today's rapidly changing information environment is full of new rules, challenges, temptations, and pitfalls, all virtually lying in wait for the independent information practitioner (IIP). Discusses why IIPs should be aware of how they face liability risks, especially in delivery of electronic information; how new and pending legislation impact them; and the legal implications of operating in cyberspace. Outlines some appropriate professional measures that can be taken to protect oneself in this new frontier. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]
