The centralized classification in its fullest form is possible only with a single classification scheme and a central indexing body in the country. Therefore, centralized classification in conventional terms, as an alternative to decentralization resulting from historical traditions, is only relative. Recently some branch scientific and technical information centres have been active in carrying out centralized classification. The introduction of 'library and bibliographic classification' in soviet libraries is a noticeable step forward to solve this problem. The tables of this classification will be widely used in the libraries of the country. The longterm collective work done by three largest soviet libraries, namely v.i. Lenin state library, m.e. Saltykov-schedrin state public library and the library of ussr academy of sciences in cooperation with the state book chamber, engaged in the construction of a scientific classification adequate for the present-day level of scientific knowledge,, comes to an end in 1966.
