The nationwide system of information on research and development in the ussr is discussed. The causes which have led to its creation, its objectives and functions, and the main phases in the system's history are discussed. The structure and functions of the system are outlined, as well as the user categories and types of service. The place held by the system in the framework of the national and international scientific and technical information system is explained.
