Abstrakt: Underscores the fact that books and reading remain absolutely central to the purpose of the library, no matter what decisions libraries make about the technology, and asserts that the provision of books remains a service that patrons should expect and demand. Yet many librarians and libraries appear reluctant to acknowledge the interests of fiction readers. Explores reasons for this phenomenon, and acknowledges the growing importance of reader advisory services in the profession. Discusses ways to promote books and reading, justifications for supporting reading and the concomitant technology that helps librarians serve patrons and their reading interests better, and validation of the personal pleasure that librarians find in reading and in the service provided to other readers.
