This paper reviews the steps of creating or adapting a performance appraisal system in an automated environment. While several of the factors reviewed have remained the same, changes which automation have introduced are noted, and focused upon, in evaluating staff performance. The components of a performance appraisal system are given, including behavioral performance standards, or competencies; factors which affect the individual's ability to do the job; the individual's objectives; the individual's current specific task assignments; and career goals.
