Throughout the 1990s, libraries experimented with subsidizing end-user unmediated document delivery as a means of expanding collections, offering faster service, and lessening demands on interlibrary loan. Presents an ongoing project at the University of Nevada at Las Vegas, conducted to evaluated whether or not providing the service met expectations. Identifies reasons for trying unmediated document delivery, evaluates its success or failure in meeting expectations, and presents considerations for deciding when the use of unmediated document delivery is advantageous. Findings of the project generally show that unmediated document delivery serves to enhance collections and that users appreciate the service. Since those who prefer to order articles themselves were not necessarily interlibrary loan users, workloads and costs associated with interlibrary loan were not diminished. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR] |
