Describes three types of indexer: (i) the author-indexer (sometimes self-appointed to fulfil a contract of publication); (ii) permanently employed professionals (a small group mainly working for annual and great legal works and newspapers); (iii) the free lance (the majority). Consistency of indexing must be ensured when done by collaborators. The society of indexers maintains a panel of indexers. Different methods of payment have been examined and payment by the number of hours spent on indexing is considered the fairest. Recommended minimum rates have been published but now need revision. Copyright rests with the indexer. Training of indexes has been organized by the society of indexers since 1958. Promotion of better indexes is the main aim as demonstrated in standards for indexes to learned and scientific journals (1960); recommendations for the preparation of indexes (b.s. 3700: 1964); training in indexing (m.i.t.); the indexer (1958-).
