Abstrakt: The following question is at the center of this study in which professional salaries were regressed on grade point averages, GRE scores, and years since graduation for working librarians: Can these same scores be used to predict subsequent success in professional librarianship? Three conclusions are examined in light of the statistical results: 1) professional salaries for men can be predicted over time; 2) professional salaries based on type of library can be predicted over time; 3) professional salaries for women cannot be predicted. Data were gathered for two groups of MLS graduates from the University of Illinois representing an 11% random sample of graduates from the period 1963-1982, and all of the 1985 graduates who completed a questionnaire form the school's placement office regarding their initial professional employment.
