This paper reports on the proceedings of the Fifth International Conference on Machine Learning. The discussion topics covered empirical approaches to learning, the sharing of machine-learning data and programs, explanation-based learning, and genetic algorithms. Three talks in subfields are also reviewed: genetic learning, connectionist learning, and theoretical results in machine learning.
