This paper considers the problem of lack of incorporation of the discourse level features of natural languages in free-text retrieval systems by reporting on an exploratory study that was conducted for the purpose of determining whether information abstracts reporting on empricial work possess a predictable discourse-level structure and whether there are lexical clues that reveal this structure.
