This paper discusses and compares the results obtained from three computer-based current awareness services, and estimates the potential put, the acceptability of the format and the timeliness. The three services in question are: 1) a computer search of chemical titles (ct) by the chemical socitey. Ct covers journals in all branches of chemistry. It provides only authors and titles, translated if necessary. 2) a computer search of chemical-biological activities (cbac) by the chemical society. Cbac covers only papers on the interaction of chemical compounds with biological systems, but provides abstracts which are available for computer search. The computer can also search for molecular formulae and for chemical abstracts registry numbers of all compounds included in the abstracts. 3) automatic subject citation alert (asca) which is a by-product of science citation index. Originally, the search profile was a list of references to older work and the output a list of new papers citing the work. Recently a 'term search' was introduced - a search for words in the titles of current papers, making it analogous to a ct search. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR] |
