Conversion tables for book classification systems specify equivalences between the notations of two or more classification schedules. Relationships between the notations of different schemes may be one-to-one, one-to-many (span to notations), or involve a 'formula' situation in which systems arrange and subdivide according to completely different philosophies. Conversion tables supply either specific notations or formulas for equating the differently arranged schedules of two schemes. Tables can be used to simplify reclassification projects, and may be used by centralized cataloging agencies serving libraries using different schemes. Computer programs may be written using conversion tables for library reclassification work. Examples are given of library of congress to dewey conversion tables. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR] |
