Abstrakt: The article presents comments on the article "Rethinking Cultural Adaptation," by D. Hardesty. Hardesty argues that in the structurationist perspective, "The transformational rules are universal, but historical contingency controls the actual ecological relationship." This statement is inaccurate on two accounts: first, transformational rules are not universal, but are specific to local places and contexts. Second, this statement fails to explicate how structuration theory provides an account of contingent outcomes to action. Cultural geographers have been, by and large, rather reluctant to incorporate social theory into their works.
