Since the 1960s and the Students Movement a lot of different Social Movements arose (New Left and Alternative Movements) in Germany They were engaged in women's rights, environment protection, international solidarity, peace, antiracism and a lot of local initiatives. Over the years nearly all of these movements produced collections, which were the starting points of "Free Archives". These archives preserve collections and records traditional archives do not feel responsible for - or are not able to acquire. In contrast to the importance of Free Archives for an alternative tradition their working-conditions are unsatisfactory. Since about ten years discussions between "free" and "traditional" archives were intensified to make Free Archives an accepted und financially promoted part of the German archival landscape.
