Letters from various readers in response to the column "Thinking Objectively," by Mauri Laitinen and Mohamed Fayad, published in the November 1997 issue of the journal "Communications of the ACM" are presented. A reader from Plano, Texas takes Watts Humphrey's book "Managing the Software Process" and discusses the techniques outlined for improving the software engineering process. A software quality manager from Magill, Australia is willing to struggle with the willing than persuading the unwilling. Another reader from Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania agrees with authors' points about the use of assessments in immature organizations as quite apt. One of the readers from Austin, Texas differs in opinion and expresses his view that assessments are not expensive either in terms of money or the amount of time. Replying to specific concerns of the readers, the authors reply on Humphrey's book, as being overstated. They agree that people often resist the documentation efforts but they think that resistance stems most often from the way processes are implemented. The authors point out that the reader who disagrees about the time and effort required for assessment provides no data to support. |
