Social history is the study of history with a focus on the people who lived it, in particular the “common people” as opposed to the elites. It encompasses numerous subfields devoted to the history of specific groups of people (according to race, ethnicity, gender, faith, or urban/rural living) and specific areas of life such as work, the family, education, childhood, and emotions. While social history was once a relatively small area of professional history compared with political and intellectual history, by the twenty-first century it became the largest historical subfield. |
