This thesis aims to examine the development of the process of acquiring education, and implicitly also social mobility, in the post-communist Czech Republic, particularly during the period of expansion of Czech tertiary educational system. In the context of the political change after 1989 and the subsequent transformation of the Soviet-type economy to a capitalist market economy, the influence of economic capital in society increased. Economic capital also plays an important role in the process of social mobility and acquiring education. Money can buy many things, such as books, computer technology, or access to a variety of leisure activities and hobbies. All of these things can positively influence a child's academic path. In the last instance, money can buy access to education through school fees. At the same time, the lack of financial capital of the family can be an obstacle to the continuation of a child's studies and can often create a toxic environment for the development of personal qualities that are necessary for a successful academic path. Even though public education in the Czech Republic is free of charge, I believe that economic capital plays an important role in achieving education and that it is essential to ask what role and how important it is.
