Chronic kidney disease (CKD) is highly prevalent disorder worldwide with increasing number of patients. Several complications are associated with end-stage of CKD, namely infection, anemia and cardiovascular diseases. Infections are probably related to an acquired cellular immunodeficiency, essentially due to T-cell lymphopenia that may result in increased apoptotic susceptibility of T-cells. Anemia generally appears in patients with glomerular filtration rate lower than 60 mL/min/1.73 m2. The red blood cells have shortened life span and are more susceptible to destruction in the uremic milieu. The lymphopenia and anemia have been associated with uremic toxins. The aim of this work was to evaluate the effect of urea on the viability of T-cells and erythrocytes (RBC), protein profile in RBC membranes, and induction of apoptosis in T-cells in vitro.
