This paper discusses institutions providing pre-school education and care in Germanspeaking cantons in Switzerland. It describes organizational structures of pre-school education and brings a closer look at everyday operation of Kindergarten for children between 4 and 6 years of age. It also presents in details the EDK-Ost 4bis8 project in which the first three to four years of compulsory education are combined. Further it discusses child care offered by both public and private institutions outside of the family (Tagesstrukturen). The thesis maps out reforming efforts in the field of pre-school education reflecting new needs of the children population and changing society in Switzerland. |
