The Cape Flats (Western Cape Province, South Africa) is situated on the low-lying sandy plain immediately adjacent to the Cape Peninsula, and is part of the mediterranean-climate Cape Floristic Region. Fire-dependant Sand Plain Fynbos, Strandveld and West Coast Renosterveld exist on natural and semi-natural remnants interpersed in a hostile landscape. The Cape Flats, its botanical attributes and the threatening processes that prevail in its densely populated urban matrix are introduced. Broad overviews of aspects of the biophysical environment, the flora, land transformation, the socio-political and institutional environment, and conservation initiatives are presented. This chapter provides a framework for the general approach and the methodologies used in the studies contained in this thesis.
