Popis: Eric Mandat's contributions to the advancement of the clarinet through pedagogy, performance, and composition are significant. As a respected pedagogue, he has served as Professor of Music and Distinguished Scholar at Southern Illinois University at Carbondale since 1981. He is an active soloist and a regular performer with the Tone Road Ramblers experimental music chamber group, the Latvian based TransAtlantic Trio, the Chicago Symphony's MusicNOW Ensemble, and Southern Illinois University at Carbondale's Outside the Box Series. By combining extended techniques, folk and jazz music, traditional compositional frameworks, and repetitive rhythmic structures, Mandat's compositional approach has led him to be one of the most prolific composers of contemporary clarinet music. His pieces for clarinet are groundbreaking and have won him distinct honors such as being selected as a recipient of the 2000, 2005, and 2009 Illinois Arts Council Artists Fellowship Awards for composition. This document explores Eric Mandat's musical background, career, and compositions. The sections include information gathered from interviews and correspondence with Mandat, his personal archives, compositions, and numerous recordings; along with recordings by other performers. Chapter 1 is a biography of Eric Mandat and his musical life. The chapter focuses on his childhood musical experiences, education, pedagogical activities, performing endeavors, and compositional background and style. Chapter 2 and 3 examine two of Mandat's compositions for solo clarinet: Preludes, book 1 and Rrowzer!. The chapters provide theoretical analyses and performance considerations derived from the author's practical experiences with the works. Each chapter offers explanations and solutions to clarinet issues that aid performers in giving an informed performance. Chapter 4 is a descriptive catalog of Mandat's published clarinet works from 1980-2010. An analytical narrative, stylistic depiction, performance level, recording availability, duration, instrumentation, and date of publication are provided for each compositional entry. The catalog offers researchers and performers a record and description of Mandat's pieces for programming and research purposes.
