This article is a systematic review of intracranial hypotension and its causes, the symptoms it produces, and the various approaches to diagnosis and management of the condition. Intracranial hypotension, whether spontaneous or iatrogenic, is underdiagnosed and oftentimes patients go without adequate medical care for years due to the elusive pathological nature of the disease. Because of this, the true incidence of intracranial hypotension is higher than the reported value. Even when diagnosed, management is difficult due to the large range in response to treatment from patient to patient. As of yet, none of the existing treatment mechanisms have been evaluated via randomized clinical trial, leaving the medical community without explicit data about which modes of treatment are most effective. Furthering the study of intracranial hypotension will increase the possibility of accurate diagnosis and management for patients suffering from this condition. |
