Popis: Alkanes are formed from biogenic matter in the deep subsurface of sedimentary basins and playa fundamental role in the global carbon cycle. Microbial reactions of alkanes involve radical enzymes, which enable their consumption of carbon and energy sources. Hexane undergoes anaerobic 'oxidation' by a denitrifying bacterium strain known as HxN1. Numerous hydrocarbons are functionalised in a similar way, which is of enormous importance for the degradation of alkanes in the environment. It has been proposed that the initial adduct derived from fumarate and hexane is converted to a CoA- thioester (I), which rearranges to (2-methylhexyl)malonyl-CoA (II) by a mechanism similar to that of coenzyme Bl2-dependent methylmalonyl-CoA mutase, a radical enzyme (Buckel and Golding, 2012).
