Popis: Hypothesis: This thesis set out to test the hypothesis first proposed by Baker et al (1995) that Vascular Endothelial Growth Factor (VEGF) may be involved in the alteration in endothelial function that is observed in the disease of pre-eclampsia. Aims: To investigate concentrations of VEGF in plasma from non-pregnant, and normal pregnant women and women with pre-eclampsia. To investigate uterine and placental expression of VEGF in non-pregnant, normal pregnant women and women with pre-eclampsia. To investigate some of the vascular adaptations that occur in pregnancy and pre-eclampsia within the uterine and systemic circulations. To investigate the effect of plasma from women with PE and VEGF on i) An in vitro endothelial cell culture model. ii) An in vitro isolated vessel model. To characterise the mechanism whereby VEGF causes any alteration in vascular function.
