This thesis is an etymological study of the Balochi verb. The relevant data (present and past stems ofBalochi verbs, dialect forms, meanings, etc.) have been extracted from all available sources. These include the large Balochi-Balochi dictionary recently published by Sayad Hashmi (Sayad Ganj, Karachi 2000), as well as older publications both by native speakers and by Western scholars such as Dames, Mayer, and Elfenbein. In addition, the native competence of the author has been used both as a primary source and as a means of checking the data found in published sources. In addition to previous etymological works dealing with the Balochi verb, such as those by Geiger, Morgenstierne and Elfenbein, the author has consulted a wide range of works dealing with Iranian and Indian languages both ancient and modem. Balochi is basically an Iranian language (with a number of archaic features, especially in its phonology), but it has borrowed many verbs from modem Indo-Aryan languages as well as a smaller number from Brahui, Arabic and other languages. As the present study shows, Balochi also has a considerable number of verbs of unknown origin. Verbs borrowed from Middle and Modem Persian are not always easy to distinguish from native Balochi words. The main part of thesis consists of an alphabetical presentation of the Balochi verbs and their etymologies. Dialectical variations are presented in summary form and meanings taken from the Sayad Ganj and other non-English sources are translated into English. The introduction gives a brief account of the Balochi language and its dialects and the main sources used in this study. A series of shorter chapters deal with verbal prefixes and suffixes, inflectional endings, and the relationship between past and present stems |
