The underlying purpose of the study was to quantify whether an associated surface EMG could be used to characterize a unique motor unit based on the spike triggered average (STA) initiated by a corresponding intramuscular EMG, as well as to furthermore see whether the STA was conserved over a period of multiple days. The spike triggered average (STA) of motor units were produced from tibialis anterior. Ultimately, it was possible to create parameters using the R2 and Peak Ratio values of the STAs that indicated an identical identity of motor units, and to observe those STAs over multiple days thereby characterizing the motor unit using surface EMGs. However, a ratio of how many motor units could be expected to be reactivated in any given day per the same muscle contraction was not able to clearly determined. |
